Welcome to our April Blog Hop!
This month we are focusing on all things Mother’s Day…it’s only a couple of weeks away in the US (though in the UK it already happened, so my Mum is getting spoiled twice, lucky lady!). Get ready for some great ideas, inspiration and how tos as you move along through the blog hop.
You may just be starting the blog hop or may have come from Kendra over at Wonderland Kind of Mind on our Living with Style Blog Hop. If you get off track at any time, the full lineup below will help you move along from blog to blog so you make sure to see and learn from all of the articles featured here today.
Homemade All Natural Moisturiser – with only two ingredients!
So I thought long and hard about what to make for this Mother’s Day themed blog hop, particularly as my Mum already had a Mother’s Day bouquet of flowers from me back in March when we celebrate it in the UK. I was really stumped til I had a phone call with her and she told me that some moisturiser I’d just given her had brought her out in an allergic rash. I felt pretty guilty about that, even though it was a nice brand, because I know my Mum has always struggled with allergies and hidden nasties in things so I thought I should have checked the label a little closer.
Then I had my genius idea – for Mother’s Day #2, I would make her some completely natural moisturiser that I know for sure has nothing but nice ingredients in it. I am hoping she will love it (I definitely do), and I think it is a fabulous present for anyone’s mother – not only is it super-moisturising and divine smelling, but the lavender makes it also feel really relaxing and pampering. And I think mums of all ages will appreciate it, especially friends with new babies who are careful to only use organic products around their children. I am thinking of making a big batch for Christmas presents now for all my friends with little ones!
So the other wonderful things about this moisturiser are that it is really easy to make, and costs no more than a store-bought moisturiser would! Brilliant.
Let me talk you through it.
- Assemble your ingredients – for one small Kilner jar of moisturiser, I used a 283ml jar of coconut oil. You can buy this really cheaply in world food markets, don’t buy it in WholeFoods unless you want it to be pricey. I also used 10-15 drops of Lavender Essential Oil. Don’t be concerned that you will have lots of lavender left – try adding a few drops to your bath in the evening and get some relax-time yourself! That’s it, just coconut oil, lavender, and a small empty jar. You could in fact use any essential oil that is suitable for topical application (i.e. direct to skin) so don’t feel tied to lavender.
- Scoop the coconut oil out of the jar into a stand mixer (it is important not to heat it to get the oil out, if it melts it won’t mix up into the creamy moisturiser texture), and turn it on. I used a balloon whisk, and mixed it for quite a while, until it was a smooth butter kind of consistency. Then I added 10-15 drops of lavender and mixed a bit longer. If it starts to smell divine, you’ve used enough, if you can’t smell the lavender, add some more, a few drops at a time.
- Once mixed, scoop it out and into your jar.
- I labelled my jar with my trusty Dymo label maker, but you could also make a pretty handmade tag.
- There you have it! The perfect Mother’s Day gift!
Do caution your Mother that this is basically an oil, so you only need a very small amount to moisturise your hands. Don’t scoop out a big blob like you would a normal moisturiser, or your hands will end up looking a little like a basted turkey! A tiny amount is plenty, and it leaves your hands feeling amazingly soft.

Such a nice gift and so easy to make. I made sugar scrubs for Christmas presents and was amazed at how easy they were. Your post reminds me I need to try some different “flavors” and brighten up someones day.

Thanks Kristy! I was thinking of using real lavender to make some bath salts as well but a sugar scrub is a lovely idea too. I think everyone is getting homemade gifts this Christmas! 🙂

Ha, I had to go public with this so that I have to give it to my Mum, so tempted to keep it myself! But a good excuse to try a different oil and make another pot for me! 🙂

Anna, I have been considering making some of these types of gifts making oils. I am a bit reluctant just because I haven’t done it and I fear they will spoil. Lavender is my go to scent of late. It just feels luxurious and calming for sure.

I’ll be honest, I don’t know how long it will last, but since it is oil based I would say quite a while. You could try bath salts, they would definitely have a long shelf life!

I very rarely put on anything on my face but this definitely makes a great gift idea for other moms I know (like my mom).

I think this would probably be better as a hand moisturiser as it is very rich. Maybe I should amend it to say so, thanks for the heads up, I didn’t realise I hadn’t! However, I do know people who use coconut oil moisturiser on their faces, and apparently it works wonders (and your skin starts to adapt to love the oiliness – at first it is a bit greasy though), so it might be worth trying! In fact, I am thinking about it – since we moved further north my skin has been taking a battering from the elements and feels like it has grown scales, so perhaps I need it!

Haha. We do need some moisture here as well – it’s really hot in the tropics and my skin tends to dry out. I just don’t like the sticky feeling most of them make, especially since it’s really humid here in our country.
